What's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

What is bjj? It is both a martial art and a combat sport that centers on grappling control for you to subdue your enemy.

Several of the moves were taken from judo and jiu-jitsu. Picking up how to execute the actual move allows even a smaller and more frail person to beat someone who is stronger which is why it's also taught in self-defense classes.

BJJ developed as early as in the 20's. It recently earned world recognition when Royce Gracie was victorious at the Ultimate Fighting Championship multiple times after it was founded in 1993. Due to the domination, several gyms are now instructing this combat sport.

One can probably say that the significance as a sport is second to football.  There are contests held often such as the European Championships, the Mundials and the Pan Am Games

If you desire to win in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, repetition is key and the lone way you can do that is through training and sparring. This signifies fighting against a live and resisting partner under simulated conditions while at the same time being careful not to cause any serious injuries.

During rolling and competition, wrestlers are mandated to don the gi. It looks just like what you would have on when you practice judo. The only difference is that the outfit has more restrictive cuffs on both the jacket and pants.

Submissions in bjj are done either through chokes or joint locks. Choking as you know involves constricting the windpipe so the enemy is unable to breathe. Apart from that, there is also what is known as a strangle which cuts off the carotid artery. A choke is less efficient than a strangle and may cause permanent damage or death which is why the second is used more frequently during tournaments.

As for joint locks which are more likely safer, what you are doing is making a lever with the body position which forces the joint to move past its normal range of motion. This is otherwise known as hyperextension and since there is no way out of it, the foe has no other action but to quit.

Anyone can learn bjj. As you improve, you get promoted to the next belt level. Noobs start with the white and move their way towards the red belt. For those who are under 15 years old, you proceed your way from white to green belt.

How quickly you grow depends on the amount of time the person invests and how quickly they learn. To reach the elite class for instance, it requires at least ten years or even more.

With BJJ making its mark in the global scene, you will not have a difficult time finding a gym that's offering classes. The only thing you have to do now is manage your time wisely since this is done in a group setting and you're just one of many that are learning the ropes of this art. As a noob, you do not have to get a uniform so just come in wearing a shirt and shorts.  If you are trying to find a bjj blog that doesn't take it too seriously, you should check out doyoubjj.com.
